Toyota’s tiny hatchback gets the bumper, completing a 15-year streak for the peppy car in North America.
According to a post on Reddit spotted by Tire Meets Road, the Mazda2-based hatchback will be leaving U.S. markets in late 2020. Although the thread was removed, the memo was preserved and exposed the data. ” Toyota would like to thank the Yaris family for fifteen years on the market and nearly half a million vehicles sold in the U.S.,” it read.
“Yaris Sedan and Yaris Hatchback production for the U.S. (including Hawaii) will end at the end of June 2020. Puerto Rico will have minimal production through November 2020”.
That memo was then followed a few days later by an official announcement from Toyota.
“The Yaris sedan and Yaris Hatchback will not be available for model year 2021. Model year 2020 will be the last year for Yaris. June 2020 will be the last month of production for the Yaris sedan and Yaris Hatchback for the U.S.,” according to Western Marketing Director Christine N. Henley of Toyota Motor North America. Despite initially good sales, the tiny hatch gradually lost popularity with consumers when they moved to compact crossovers and SUVs. 2019 was still the worst year for sales, with only 6,256 units sold in Canada. The last time Toyota sold more than 1,000 per month in the U.S. was July 2019.
Although Toyota Canada has yet to announce that the vehicle has indeed been discontinued here, we ‘re fairly confident that even the U.S. doesn’t get it, either. But, when we do have it, we will email you with an official response.
